Wondering

See that shoe there 
by the side of the highway?
Is it detritus from some horrific accident
that left a carful of joyriding teenagers 
dead?
Their parents and friends 
forever grieving? 
Wondering 
If only they hadn’t
If only I had.

I wonder
but it's too terrible to consider for long.

Or did a college student
driving his entire life back home for the summer
Stop to change a tire
open the door
and the shoe fell
unnoticed
to the pavement?
Later 
finding only one shoe
did he wonder aloud 
What the…?
Where the heck is my other shoe?

I wonder
but I think he did.
